12-year-old becomes Europe's youngest iPhone app developer

A 12-year-old boy from Waterford in Ireland has become the youngest person in Europe to become a published iOS app developer.

Jordan Casey has had his game, Alien Ball Vs Humans, accepted into the Apple app store after teaching himself how to code by reading textbooks and searching online for help and advice.

According to a report by the Irish Examiner newspaper, the primary school pupil first began dabbling in code and programming three years ago.

Jordan said: "I read a few books and was looking online for help. I then learned Objective C and a bit of HTML. I've been developing websites in HTML since I was nine."

Now that his first app has been accepted by Apple, Jordan said he will continue to code and hopes to carve himself a career as a freelance programmer.

He said: "It was amazing. I had no idea when I started off the project that anything like this would happen. It is so exciting and I am definitely going to keep developing and keep working on more apps."

The youngster is now making an Android version of his game so it can be downloaded onto a wider range of smartphones.

Professional services firm Deloitte said last month that it expects the number of applications available to smartphone users to double over the next 12 months.
